Do you want a phenomenal smile? Most people do. The great thing is, it’s easy to do! It takes just a little bit of daily effort: a few minutes of dental hygiene per day, and watching the foods you eat.

First, start by brushing and flossing your teeth every day. Brushing and flossing are the fundamentals of a good oral hygiene routine, and are vital in the fight against cavities, plaque, tooth stains, and other oral problems.

Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day. 2×2: easily remembered, and foundational to healthy teeth. Use a soft-bristled brush that has earned the ADA Seal of Acceptance; stiff bristled will harm your gums and tooth enamel, doing more harm than good. For similar reasons, use gentle pressure when you brush. A rough scrubbing will scratch and damage your teeth, and doesn’t get them any cleaner.

Flossing is the daily companion to brushing, and should not be forgotten. Use a single-filament thread and a gentle sawing motion to remove plaque and debris from teeth. Floss all the way around every tooth, including behind the back molars. If flossing is difficult for you, make sure to talk to Dr. Jason Brown about flossing alternatives.

Watch the foods you eat. Avoid sticky, starchy, and sugary foods. If you do choose to eat or drink these foods every once in awhile, make sure to clean your teeth extra-thoroughly that day. Eat acidic foods with meals, and avoid sipping on acidic drinks (like soda or juice) throughout the day. Accompany acidic drinks with a large glass of water to help clean teeth and neutralize acids.

Finally, remember to visit your dentist twice a year. If you are in the Naperville, Illinois area, be sure to call North Pointe Dental Care at 630-245-0200 to schedule an appointment! Our entire team is ready and waiting to help you get the smile of your dreams!
